What is a leader?
After experiencing our amazing first Shabbaton together, we were finally back for another exciting workshop!
To start we had a hilarious icebreaker
where we had to introduce our Israeli counterparts with out stuttering, umming
or erring. It may seem simple but it seemed no one could complete their full
introduction without an um or an err. It was a great way to start as everyone
was laughing uncontrollably and got comfortable within minutes!
Following this, we had Nadia and Dahlia lead our Peer led
sessions, which are always interesting and fun, and they didn’t disappoint!
Each person was given 4 sticky notes on which they had to devote two to fun
things that happened in December and two fun things that happened in January.
When that was completed we moved to the other side of the room where a circle
divided into two, for the two months, were set out. Each person stuck their two
pieces of notes in their respective months and in the end there was a perfect
circle full of sticky notes with each persons exhilarating holiday experiences.
We then discussed what we thought about our holidays and why we had put them
down. Overall it was a great activity and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy
it.
Leading on from there, we had a notable
guest speaker by the name of Edwin Black, which in the short time he had, told
us about the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Black had quite a one
sided approach that caused a lot of us to question what we believed. In the
short time that he spoke to us, he was able to convey his very authoritative
opinion, that some of us agreed with while some of us didn’t. All on in all I
think it was a great learning curve for us all and displayed to us some views
that we possibly haven’t seen or experienced before.
Continuing on from the speaker, we were led
through the corridors one at a time with our books and pens in hand looking at
some very inspirational leadership quotes with very meaningful questions
accompanying them. There were many a question that looked at a wide range of
what leadership means, why people choose to lead and what makes people a great
leader. The quotes that were on display were from famous leaders round the
world to emphasize the importance of what they were saying. We finished off by
coming back into the main room and all answering the question of “what kind of
leader do you want to be” on one page.
We finally finished off a great session by
looking at the future events on the calendar and briefly talking about what
each of us will have to do to contribute to our next Shabbaton were we help
organize it.
Until next time!
